Spikes Fundraising and Tailgating

This weekend the Texas Iron Spikes were out to help raise money for our primary philanthropy, Special Olympics of Texas. Spikes helped organize and run the Danol Lam Olympics, an all day competition that featured popular lawn games. It was $100 per team to enter and all of the proceeds were donated directly to the Special Olympics of Texas. We had a wonderful time at this event and look forward to helping out next year as well!

While some Spikes were fundraising for SOTX others followed the Texas football team all the way to Oxford, Mississippi! A handful of Spikes as well as Spikes Alumni were in Mississippi this past Saturday to support the Horns as they faced the Ole Miss Rebels. Spikes and alumni brought Texas tailgating to the Grove and then cheered on the Longhorns to a 66-31 stomping of the Rebels. Hook'em!

2012 Spring Classic Softball Tournament

On April 28th, 2012 the Texas Iron Spikes will host the eleventh annual Spring Classic Softball Tournament benefiting Special Olympics Texas (SOTX). Thanks to the hard work of our Vice President Chris Davila and the softball committee, we are expecting a large turn out of teams represented by numerous organizations here at The University of Texas as well as the Austin area. We aim to get as many people involved as possible and will continue using two divisions consisting of mens and Co-Ed where one team will be crowned winner of each. Games will begin at 10 AM Saturday morning and each team will be guaranteed 2 games.

Over the last ten years, the Spring Classic Softball Tournament has been extremely successful, raising over $100,000 for our philanthropy. Just within the 2011-2012 school year we have raised $15,000! So far we have had 11 companies and groups give platinum level sponsorships toward our cause and we thank them for their generous contributions. We hope to see you there to build camaraderie as well as experience some friendly competition. Thanks and Hook'em

When: Saturday April 28th, 2012 10:00 a.m.
Where: Krieg Fields
Entry Fee: $150 per team (up to 12 people)
All players receive: T-shirt and BBQ and unlimited beverages (both alcoholic and non alcoholic)

Volunteering and Ball'n

This past Sunday Iron Spikes members volunteered at the LIVESTRONG Half Marathon by setting up, handing out water, and cheering on their participants to raise cancer awareness. We would also like to congratulate Nic Ochoa, Nicky Enriquez, and our President Adiel Escobedo for their contribution in completing the 13 mile run. Good job guys!

Following both A and B Team victories, the C Team joined in with a 23-17 win of their own for their first of the season. Good luck next week as the regular season wraps up and we continue our drive to intramural basketball playoffs.

Pulling Our Weight

Iron Spikes and members of Texas Spirits teamed up and volunteered at the Special Olympics Texas Fire Truck Pull, hosted by Austin Firefighters, Austin Police Department and Travis County Sheriff's Office, on Saturday, November 12th.

The fundraising event featured a challenge of strength and stamina, in which teams of 12 people competed to see how fast they could pull a 55,000 pound fire truck a distance of 50 feet! Our team was comprised of the following people:

Matt Bowman
Nishant Jayant
Blake Barber
Chase Cobb
Tyler Joseph
Neven Simpson (Texas Spirits)
Ethan Thomson
Ryan Wilhelms
Rich Miller
Jon Lugo
Jackson Gould
Will Lenoir

Our team was able to pull the fire truck 50 feet in 17.46 seconds! Other members of Spikes and Spirits also helped out by cooking and serving chicken fajitas for all of the teams and SOTX volunteers. It was an exciting and rewarding experience for all involved!
