Special Olympics of Texas Basketball Tournament 2/26/2011

This weekend, the Texas Iron Spikes volunteered at a SOTX basketball tournament held at Texas State University. It was a great opportunity for us to see our philanthropy in action, as well as a very hands-on way to give back. Most Spikes assisted with keeping score, logging player statistics, and - of course - cheering on the athletes. Witnessing the desire and ability of the athletes was an amazing experience; it only furthered our motivation to raise as much money for SOTX as possible.

Livestrong Austin Marathon 2/20/2011

This past weekend, several Iron Spikes volunteered for the Austin Marathon. Everyone arrived at 5:30 AM to help set up water stations for the event, and then handed out water to the runners at the 1.75 mile mark. It was a truly amazing and inspiring experience to be able to assist those who had trained so hard, many of whom were running in memory of a loved one. The runners themselves could not have been nicer, as many yelled a "Thanks!" as they ran by. According to those actives in attendance, this was one of the best service events that had ever been to. Also, we would like to congratulate our own Nick Enriquez for finishing the Austin Half-Marathon!

Spike of the Week 2/12-2/17/2011

Congratulations to DJ Kinneman and Brooks Steele for being awarded Spike of the Week. Both guys did a great job helping out our RCs and played a vital role in this semester's recruiting process: they were constantly tabling and getting to know as many recruits as possible.

Volunteer Fair 2/16/2011

This past week, UT hosted its semesterly volunteer fair. Texas Iron Spikes were specifically requested to cook for the fair and its volunteers. Many Spikes spent the day cooking and selling chicken fajitas-as we so often do-in order to raise money for our philanthropy Special Olympics of Texas, while also making sure no one working the fair went hungry. In total, we were able to raise $250, all of which will go towards SOTX.

Spike of the Week 2/4-2/11/2011

Congratulations to Jackson Gould and Austin Wozniak for being awarded Spike of the Week! They were both chosen as a result of their attendance at the University of Texas' Leadership and Ethics Institute Leadership Series. The Leadership Series is a series of workshops designed to develop both individual student leaders as well as provide resources for growth and change for student organizations. Their attendance demonstrates their commitment to keeping Texas Iron Spikes continually moving in a positive direction.

Jake Thompson and Matt Beltran strategizing for the big relay race
Last week Texas Iron Spikes hosted our
semesterly Date Skate event. Everyone had a great (& safe) time dressing up as their favorite athlete and generally making a fool of themselves out on the rink. We would like to give a special thanks to our Social Officers Pat Guevara and Steven Truong for planning and organizing this extremely fun event.
